1. Horsford Nursery - Honey Locust

Carving honey locust is like carving concrete. This stuff is dense, heavy, and stiff. The orange color is unique among trees in VT. The only other wood around here that is similar in color is buckthorn, which is an invasive and doesn't grow nearly as large. The sap wood (white portion of the tree) is prone to splitting and cracking. I try to minimize the amount of sap wood in projects because of this but it the contrast is so dynamic it is hard to resist. I carved these bowls before the wood was dry. After shaping the projects, I put them in a large lawn and leaf bag to slow down the drying process to resist cracking. Hopefully it works.

This is a great project to be involved with. I'm grateful for the opportunity to partner with Horsford on this project. Patrons have admired these trees for the past few decades and now they will be able to take a piece of them home. Some of these items will be sold at their retail location, others will be available on my website. If you would like to be notified when they are completed join my mailing list at the bottom of this page.

2. American Chestnut

The catastrophe of the chestnut blight is well known. It's one motivator for me to use local trees for my work.
